A virtual machine is more than good enough for a production environment IMO. We were only using very basic functionality (2,000+ host checks, 0 service checks) with e-mail notifications, but it does what it is asked to do. I got some strange errors saying the file was 700 something petabytes. I downloaded the CentOS and it works fine. Not sure if it's only me, but thought I'd let you know.
